“Outgrown” is expected to release early 2023 via Berlin based label Lekker Collective.
“as quiet as it seems“
Following up on his acclaimed 2024 remix EP Outgrown: B-Sides, NYC-based producer Houis is kicking off the new year with a transformative project. Enter riel, a new moniker that will carry his lo-fi legacy into a fresh chapter. Under this alias, Houis unveils the introspective lo-fi 12-track album, as “quiet as it seems”.
This EP marks a pivotal evolution in Houis’ artistic journey. Having explored a myriad of genres and styles under the Houis moniker, the producer sees riel as a space dedicated to lo-fi storytelling and self-reflection. Meanwhile, Houis will continue to branch out, collaborating as a songwriter and artist in alt/RnB and pop spaces.
Released under his longstanding label Lekker Collective, as “quiet as it seems” is a heartfelt collection inspired by his move to Brooklyn and his experiences living on his own for the first time.
“The whole musical and visual theme for this album has been my up-to-date experience of moving to Brooklyn and living on my own for the first time. It’s come with both a lot of joy, new friendships, occasional loneliness, and a new music-making environment. “as quiet as it seems almost feels like a journal documenting the different types of nostalgic emotions I’ve experienced since being here.” - Houis
“Outgrown: B-Sides”
NYC producer Houis releases Outgrown: B-Sides, featuring instrumentals and remixes of track taken from his debut album Outgrown.
An experiment in incorporating indie, synth pop, and some garage sounds into his signature blissed out RnB, the debut full length features a diverse range of features, while Outgrown: B-Sides further explores a myriad of electronic genres with remixes ranging from amapiano, electronic and even some spoken word.
“Open & Repeat”, the originally indie number created alongside Emmett Kai, is reworked by Houis’ new dance moniker Cotton Duck into a electronic production with French flare.
China born, London raised Noga Bedo (of French and Malagasy roots), takes the original chillwave “Say Enough” with Couch Prints, and gives it a private school amapiano do-over.
“Fizzy”, a lofi instrumental offering, is reworked into a downtempo electronic creation with two versions by Australian producer Danny Barwick, including a spoken word piece by NYC poet Winniebell Zong.
Amidst a slew of lofi instrumental productions, Houis invites a diverse list of collaborators on the original Outgrown album, including Australian soul-crooner Blush'ko on “Daydeamin“, experimental pop duo Couch Prints on "Say Enough". Whimsical “Can’t Explain” features singer/songwriter Foreignlocal. and guitarist Ushuaia.
Debut EP “Outgrown“
Houis releases debut album Outgrown.
An experiment in incorporating indie, synth pop, and some garage sounds into his signature blissed out RnB, the debut full length features a diverse range of features.
“In addition to aiming for a clean and simplistic production style throughout the album, a goal of mine was to get out of my comfort zone a bit through experimenting with new plugins and sound effects. I personally love lofi music, which is often how my stuff is categorized, but I think finding a unique sound within that genre can definitely be challenging.
“For a While” might be my favorite instrumental song on the album. For the majority of tracks on Outgrown, I was really drawn towards creating music that felt both melancholic and energetic - so “For a While” is a bit more upbeat than the rest. I wanted it to have elements from old school hip hop / lofi like the grungy beat and classic Rhodes piano that I always gravitate towards, and overall was aiming to create a more groovy tune that I can play for future live sets. - Houis
